Summary
It’s the Mr. Onyx show. He’s more than 8 pounds in week 6. He leads both the overall and the percentage gain this week. He doesn’t consume any more resources than any of the others, he just uses what he gets very efficiently. He doesn’t quite have as much coat as the others so he doesn’t really seem any bigger than the others until you look closely.
There is a new second place in Mr. Ruby. Ms. Sapphire solidly leads the girls now in 3rd place in the overall. Both the girls were both solidly in second for quite awhile and are now beginning to slip back from the boys. Mr. Emerald is no longer the smallest pup. It’s now Ms. Pearl. I believe Ms. Pearl has been adjusting to solid food more slowly than Ms. Sapphire and the boys. There is always a point in litter weight development where the girls start to give way to the boys and that time is usually when the pups move off of Mama’s milk and on to solid food. That time appears to be now for this litter too.
Puppy Development
The puppies have good food drive. Puppies love the raw beef the most, in steak form. But not so much the ground beef. The ground beef is their least favorite of all. Raw lamb with bone is liked very well as is raw pork ribs. It would seem they like their meets as unfettered with as possible. We haven’t done raw chicken or turkey yet. We may not get to that before they go home.
Puppies don’t want, and maybe they just don’t need, the raw milk anymore. They will eat some cheese, but them leave some. They seem to not want dairy much. They get water with their meat. They have a robust appetite for water (just a note on that, we have well water here).
Their diet is mostly ruminent meat and water, frequently on meaty bones of which they consume all, bone included. They do like cooked chicken and beef liver.
The big milestones are now happening. They have had their first two car rides this last week. The first was about 6 minutes and the second of about 20 minutes. They were way quieter than expected and the highlight was no car sickness on either trip. There was a little whinning on the first trip. At the end of the second 20 minute car ride, two of them were actually sleeping. At the stop of the first car ride, puppies came out of the crate with zero hesitation. The novel environment was not a deterrent.
They have had their first time out of the house and out on grass in an open space for play. See the prior post for a brief clip of the pups chasing Kellie around by the barn.
Mama just checks on pups, I imagine for social reasons. Outside of that, she keeps her nipples as far away from their teeth as she can.
Puppies are microchipped. Partially for contractual reasons and additionally for the upcoming veterinary checkup which will happen somewhere on or after their week 8 birthday.
For the next week, we will begin introducing them to the outside world in the form of taking them places with people (shopping and eating establishments are the most likely candidates) and introducing them to having some free interaction with other dogs (up until, they’ve been in a controlled setting).
