Mr. Onyx took the lead over from Ms. Pearl during the last 24 hours in both categories of weight gain of raw and % change. The litter average is above 1 pound now.
Everything is as expected. Puppies look good. Mama looks good. Weight changes were as expected.

Ms. Pearl leads the way with both the highest weight and the largest percentage gain at 17.3 ounces and 35.2%. She blew through 1 pound easily on the first day. The average percentage gain was 29.3% taking the average weight up to 15.3 ounces.
These weight change percentages are normal. We expect at least 15% from all puppies on day 1. On day 2, we expect something above 10% but usually less than 20%. Day 3 will be much less and typically well below 10% and that’s when daily growth begins to settle in.
These daily summaries will be done for the first 3 days and then after that, a weekly summary for 9 weeks.
It was a long night and morning delivering 5 puppies. We are tired but pleased. There were three boys and two girls. The whelping went very smoothly. Mama is doing very well as are all the puppies. The “Notes” column in the “Whelping Summary” tables below is mostly empty since there weren’t any “out of the ordinary” events. There was one anomaly that was worrisome to us in the beginning that ended up being of no concern. Here are some of our takeaways on the whelping of this litter (note that this article is about the whelping and not the puppies themselves).
Our historical average birth weight of our Laekenois puppies is 11.77 ounces. This litter was slightly heaver at 11.9. This is probably because of the smaller litter count relative to prior litters.
Our historical average time between puppy deliveries of our Laekenois puppies is 66.0 minutes. The time between puppy deliveries for this litter was rather extended at 115.8 minutes per delivery which isn’t too far from double our normal duration. It was a bit worrisome waiting as long as we did between puppies #1 and #2, however, Mama was doing well by all of our metrics and observations. Once the 3rd puppy came, we just realized it was going to take a little while longer between puppies than usual and there was nothing going on of concern.
Our historical average largest puppy birth weight in litters is 13.3 ounces. This litter is lighter at 12.8 ounces.
Our historical average smallest puppy birth weight in litters is 10.6 ounces. This litter is heavier at 10.8 ounces.
Three of the five puppies (all three males coincidentally) had rear dewclaws which were removed. No statistics here only to say we have had one large Laekenois litter with no rear dewclaws at all and have never had a Laekenois litter where all puppies had dewclaws.

All puppies went to nurse on their own immediately after being dried. They needed no help to find a teet or latch on to a teet. Mama opened the birth sack for every puppy on her own and then we cleaned and dried the puppies. None of the puppies needed their air passages cleaned after birth. All vitals were normal at birth.
No abnormalities have been found (cleft palette, hernias, etc).
