When doing a natural whelping, it’s always a good idea to know how many you probably have coming. If the bitch stops delivering while there are still 3 more to go, an emergency vet visit will be necessary. This is not just to save the pups, but to save mama as well.
Here is the X-ray in this last week of her pregnancy taken earlier today.
Vet says 5. Kellie says she sees 6 but she thinks there is 7. Robert says 5 definite with 1 or 2 more than that. The counts are all over the place. But we have an idea of what to expect which is what was needed.
Some people counts skulls. Some people count spines. Some use some combination of that…
We expect to have the pups this weekend sometime. The expected whelp date is this upcoming Sunday 2026-02-08 according to our original whelp estimate.
We are actually very relieved for once to have a small litter. If what we see here is correct, this will be the smallest Laekenois litter we have ever had.
P.S. This is an example of just how certain TWO-DIMENSIONAL X-rays are. Think about the next time you have an X-ray taken of your dog’s hips, elbows, or what not.
