Weight Summary:
The average for all the puppies at the end of week two is comfortably above two pounds and the puppies are doing well, averaging more than 50% gains. Ms. Pearl, the lightest born, was the biggest performer for the week at 62.24% weight gain. Her male counterpart was Mr. Amethyst at 58.51% for the week. Ms. Ruby still leads the overall with Mr. Amethyst right on her tail at only an ounce behind.
FYI: Next week’s weights will be reported in pounds due to the need to change scales as the puppies grow. This week’s weight information will be represented in pounds for comparison purposes.
Mama’s Health:
Mama is still doing well and eating well, but she cannot keep up with this group. Kellie frequently refers to these pups as “greedy”. As of Sunday night (07/19), we have started to supplement. We expected that we would start supplementing earlier in the week than we actually did so Libby is hanging tough with them.
Puppy Development:
There are lots of milestones in week two.
- The pups are walking with legs fully extended (no bellies are scraping on the floor)
- Eyes are open on all puppies
- None of them mind human handling
- They all recognize familiar scents
- They have begun responding to auditory stimuli during the week for the first time, although not universal for the litter yet
- All puppies were able to bottle feed immediately on first contact with an artificial nipple, which is a bit unusual, which may go back to the level of “greed” for this litter
That about sums it up for week 2.
Have a good week and God bless.
